Campaign Director

Alabama Arise is a statewide nonprofit, nonpartisan coalition of congregations, organizations and individuals united in our belief that people in poverty are suffering because of state policy decisions. We also recognize the decisive role that racism plays in creating barriers to political participation and economic equality. Through Arise, groups and individuals join together to promote state policies to improve the lives of people living in poverty. Using policy analysis, advocacy and organizing, Arise provides a structure in which Alabamians can engage in public debates to promote the common good.

Position

Alabama Arise seeks a Campaign Director to develop and lead Arise’s efforts to drive smart, savvy education and engagement campaigns to win Arise policy priorities that build economic opportunity and well-being for all Alabamians. This newly created position will be responsible for developing, guiding and growing our campaign capacity through our Medicaid expansion campaign. The Campaign Director is a senior staff position and will serve as a member of Arise’s leadership team, facilitating collaborative efforts across our policy, organizing, development and communications teams to align resources and efforts to maximize campaign impact.

The ideal candidate also looks forward to shaping a new role with an entrepreneurial, self-starter spirit; can design high-impact advocacy strategies; and loves harnessing the power of teams and diverse grassroots voices.

Major functions and tasks

  1. Campaign development, management and coordination
    • Develop and execute an issue advocacy campaign to drive Alabama toward full Medicaid expansion, using strategies including earned media, digital engagement plans, voter education, citizen advocacy and storytelling.
    • Coordinate a coalition strategy table to engage grassroots and grasstops stakeholders and partner organizations.
    • Assist in the development and launch of a campaign website.
    • Work with internal and external leaders to advance equity across race, gender and ethnicity, building a campaign that is inclusive and welcoming to those most directly impacted by Alabama’s refusal to expand Medicaid.
  1. External relations
    • Represent the organization in coalition settings, community meetings and other workgroup and partner meetings where appropriate.
  1. Other duties
    • Fully participate as a member of the Arise staff by presenting campaign updates at various Arise meetings with staff, board and funders.
    • Manages projects in collaboration with other team leaders, including the communications, organizing and policy directors.
    • Performs other duties as assigned related to Arise’s mission, including assistance with the annual meeting, Legislative Day, and other organization-wide events and initiatives.

Essential qualifications

  • Strong commitment to the mission and values of Alabama Arise.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field, and/or years of experience commensurate with the knowledge and skills desired. (A minimum of five years’ experience in community organizing, direct voter contact, advocacy and/or policy work is strongly preferred.)
  • Track record of leadership in issue-based advocacy campaigns and community engagement efforts.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong project management skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and diplomacy skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in highly collaborative, relationship-driven work.

Other knowledge and skills desired

  • Proven ability to craft and execute high-impact issue advocacy campaign strategies, with experience using modern civic engagement tools in the context of legislative policy debates.
  • Strong knowledge of and passion for state-level policymaking strategies and building power in partnership with diverse communities, including those most impacted.
  • Experience building and managing coalitions and strategic relationships with diverse groups and interests.
  • Effectiveness and credibility in impacted communities, along with ability to work collaboratively and successfully with diverse stakeholders.
  • A strong understanding of the role that white supremacy plays in our society, systems and institutions, and experience advancing strategies that address racialized power dynamics in external and internal components of a campaign.
  • A demonstrated ability to manage and collaborate effectively across differences.
  • Strong leadership, management and planning skills.
  • Experience managing and implementing digital communications and campaign tools.
  • Capacity to prioritize projects, work simultaneously on multiple ventures and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Basic understanding of state and federal legislative processes.

Compensation

The Campaign Director is a full-time position that reports to the Executive Director. The salary range is $55,000 to $60,000 annually based on experience, in addition to a full benefits package including health, dental and vision coverage, retirement, paid vacation and sick leave, and generous professional development opportunities.

The position will be based in Arise’s Montgomery office. However, alternative work location arrangements may be made if the best qualified candidate is located elsewhere.

Story Collection Coordinator

Position

Alabama Arise seeks a Story Collection Coordinator to identify, collect, develop and share the personal stories of Alabamians affected by health care policy, with a special focus on people impacted by the state’s failure to expand Medicaid. The coordinator also will work to equip and empower Alabamians to become advocates and share their own stories with media, policymakers and community members.

The ideal candidate is passionate about building a better Alabama for all and values dignity, racial equity, justice and opportunity. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong interpersonal and organizing skills; strong reporting and writing skills; and a demonstrated interest in health care policy at the local, state and/or federal level.

Major functions and tasks

  • Collect, develop and deploy at least 40 consumer stories per year, including written summaries and high-quality photos and/or video, in a story sharing campaign focused on Medicaid.
  • Work with Arise’s organizing and policy teams, as well as Arise member groups and other organizations, to build relationships with individuals and to equip them for participation in the campaign’s story collection efforts and advocacy for Medicaid defense and expansion.
  • Maintain a story bank and a database of the consumers and advocates contacted and engaged.
  • Work with the communications team to prepare and share Medicaid stories with media members and to connect journalists in a timely fashion with people willing to share their stories.
  • Work with the Campaign Director, Legislative Director and policy team to share Medicaid stories with federal and state policymakers.
  • Prepare Medicaid stories for distribution through blog posts, emails, graphics and social media as part of a coordinated digital campaign.
  • Work with the organizing team to incorporate consumers into existing advocacy events such as community meetings, meetings with policymakers and health care rallies.

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to the mission and values of Alabama Arise.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field, and/or experience commensurate with the required knowledge and skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout Alabama.
  • Knowledge of federal and state policy issues related to health care access and affordability, as well as other structural barriers facing people with low incomes.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, solve problems, work collaboratively and juggle multiple tasks.
  • Experience in community organizing, reporting and/or other relevant community outreach.
  • Experience with photography, videography and social media is preferred.

Additional information

The Story Collection Coordinator is a full-time position that reports to the Communications Director. The salary range is $45,000 to $50,000 annually, in addition to a full benefits package including health, dental and vision coverage, retirement, paid vacation and sick leave, and generous professional development opportunities.

The position will be based in Arise’s Montgomery office. However, alternative work location arrangements may be made if the best qualified candidate is located elsewhere.
